IconSpeak Launched in Australia & New Zealand - IconSpeak Loaded on a Pocket PC Gives Stroke, Disphasia, and Mute Persons Speech
IconSpeak is a speech product that utilises the newer Pocket PCs (PDAs). In Australia, New Zealand and SW Pacific IconSpeak software is bundled with a Pocket PC (PDA) providing a ready to use off the shelf 'communications solution' for the user. Users simply touch the easily recognizable Icons and a spoken word or phrase is communicated.
December 3, 2004 -- TLC Innovations provides IconSpeak basic-speech with a set of 500 icons and 375 words and /or phrases. The first level of customization (basic+) can be selected from a library of a further 400 icons and 300 phrases. We also can further customise by creating new Icons and Speech as well as utilising digital pictures for icons and recording new voice responses The portability of IconSpeak makes IconSpeak ideal for people who may be stationary or mobile and on the go.
IconSpeak liberates persons who are unable to speak a way to communicate with clear and unabigious speech. Ideal for persons who are unable to speak owing to stroke, disphasia and progressive neural degernative disease
Who could use IconSpeak?
- Persons who have experienced stroke and have difficulty speaking.
- Persons who in post operative situations find themselves unable to communicate vocally.
- Persons with learning difficulties and motor speech disorders
- Persons with expressive dysphasia.
- Persons who have undergone laryngectomy and require a handy assistive communication device.
- Adults suffering from a progressive, or degenerative disorder whose speech is progressively becoming impaired.
- Speech and language therapists/teachers working with clients with expressive speech/language difficulties.
- for assessment, educational and therapeutic needs.
- Speech and language therapists working in the acute phase with adults who have undergone vocal tract surgery or have sustained a CVA or brain injury.

What should Users be able to manage?
- Recognize simple coloured or black/white visual images (photos, symbols, pictures) maximum size 25mm x 29mm.
- Touch point with reasonable accuracy on the touch screen (unless using adaptations).
- Understand spoken language at the three year age equivalent as a minimum level of ability.
- Use categorization skills, or learn to categorize within at least broad subject areas.
